There are tremendous challenges in our world today. Michael Moore’s films have been some of the most powerful channels through which many of us have become aware of a number of them. However, the most important lessons to take away from his work and his success may be under-recognized.
The moral courage that Moore shows in his films and in his life offer an inspiring example for us and our children. The tales of the broken mechanisms of democracy that swirl throughout all of his work in the areas of our campaign, election and media systems must draw a greater proportion of our attention and energies. And to fundamentally impact our world for the better, both of these areas must be focused on in tandem by a diverse range of individuals and organizations full of passion, energy and wisdom.
When we are able to approach change in this fashion, we will finally be making the most efficient use of our resources toward optimizing the systems that affect our lives so dearly, rather than wasting much of it by either submitting in silence to our fears or by working separately and sporadically on a buffet of symptomatic emotional issues. Through a combination of building courage in our populace, tapping deeply emotional symptomatic issues to generate motivation, and then transferring our passions to unemotional, but core leverage points of change, we can finally sustainably realize sorely needed improvements in health, peace, workers’ rights, environmental issues, and in many other areas that affect our lives so deeply.
